TIME ICON NO II: HELL ON THE EARTH

Artist Statement

The images of the World Trade Centre I saw on CNN on September 11, 2001 made an enormous visual impact that haunted me for months. I tried to paint THE ATTACK but was not satisfied with the outcome – my visualisation did not resemble the strong images in my mind. I was looking for a way to express the horror of this vicious act of destruction. I was also attempting to place it in a historical context, to understand the political consequences and the way that 9 /11 would affect our future. I knew instantly that 9/11 would brutally curtail our liberties. We would be forced to sacrifice privacy in the interests of national security. Restrictions on immigration and transfer of financial assets are just two examples of this.

“NEVER AGAIN”

HELL ON EARTH shows a monochromatic three-dimensional wooden cabinet installation from Gordon’s signature TIME-ICON series, with mounted 230 Barbie dolls, celebrity-icons and silver-grey-based paintings, bringing the essence of Rodin’s Gates of Hell and Dante’s Inferno into the 21st century intertwined with philosophical inspirations from Dante’s DIVINE COMEDY, sexual elements from Hieronymus Bosch’s THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS and of Boccaccio’s DECAMERONE and developed in a dramatic series of experiences representing human action.

With the inspiration in Rodin’s Gates of Hell and Dante’s Inferno Gordon typically refers to classical artistic tradition and Hell on Earth towers above its viewers with its epic proportions that are of course reminiscent of the Towers that provided the vivid image of inspiration for the complete Moments of Historical Impact series.
