Time Icon No II: Hell On The Earth
Artist Statement:
The devastating events of September 11, 2001, had a profound impact on me and inspired me to create this mixed-media sculpture as part of my signature TIME-ICON series. My aim was to create a powerful and thought-provoking piece that would force viewers to confront their emotions and contemplate the political and societal consequences of the tragedy.
I started by painting "THE ATTACK," but it didn't capture the powerful images that were seared into my mind. I wanted to find a way to express the horror of the destruction and place it in a historical context that would help me understand its significance for our future. The resulting installation, "Hell on Earth," is a monochromatic three-dimensional wooden cabinet with 230 mounted Barbie dolls, celebrity icons, and silver-grey paintings. It draws inspiration from classical artistic traditions, including Rodin's Gates of Hell and Dante's Inferno, and is developed in a dramatic series of experiences representing human action.
The installation is designed to tower over viewers, reminding them of the Twin Towers that provided me with the vivid visual imagery for the Moments of Historical Impact series. It brings together philosophical inspirations from Dante's Divine Comedy, sexual elements from Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights, and Boccaccio's Decameron to create a powerful and immersive experience.
I invite you to explore the installation and contemplate its themes, which are as relevant today as they were when the events of 9/11 unfolded.
